STABLE CARBON ISOTOPE ANALYSIS OF PRODUCTS FROM COAL-TAR SAND BITUMEN COPROCESSING

A Western Kentucky No. 9 coal and tar sand bitumen were catalytically coprocessed by using the CAER 1/8 ton/day pilot plant facility. The feedstocks and products were extensively characterized. The delta-C-13 ratios of the fractions were utilized to determine quantitatively the contribution of the coal and tar sand bitumen to the product slate. The coal contribution to the coprocessing product slate was greatest in the heavy distillate and resid fraction. It was found that processing caused fractionation of the carbon isotopes which must be accounted for in the mass balance calculations. Fractionation of the carbon isotopes was greatest in the product gases and the naphtha fraction.
