NITROGEN RATES AND CHLOROPHYLL CONTENT IN MAIZE LEAVES

The relationship between nitrogen doses [0, 50, 100 and 200 mg(N) kg-1 (soil)] and chlorophyll (Chl) a and b contents in leaves of maize (Zea mays L.ev. DeKalb XL 500) plants of two ages (13 and 28 d after emergence) was studied in pots in a greenhouse. The increased nitrogen nutrition increases the Chl content in leaves, dry matter yield and leaf area. The N effect on Chl content was evident only in 28 d plants. Leaf area was highly correlated with both Chl content and dry matter.
