摘要
Analysis of state-level data from 1976-88 confirms that third-party voting participation rates in United States presidential elections are explained by electorate perceptions of major-party failure in addressing national problems and by implications from the rational voter model. The relevance of the ''closeness hypothesis'' occurs despite the existence of significant institutional barriers and the winner-take-all provision of the electoral college system.
