Scope and Limits of Bourbon Military Reforms in Rio de la Plata: The Implementation of the Militia Regulation of 1801 in the Spanish-Portuguese Borders

This article reconstructs the trajectory of the disciplined militias of the Rio de la Plata from its early history, and then focuses on the Regulation of 1801, its effective implementation in the Intendencia of Buenos Aires and the negotiations and tensions between colonial authorities and the town council. Afterwards it addresses the militia situation in the Frontier of Uruguay, which comes into greater prominence after the Portuguese annexation of the Eastern Missions, noticing the contrast between the projects of the central authorities with the local commanders and some of the solutions effectively implemented which diverted diametrically from the Bourbon model.
