Requirements for high-performance systems, many of which will use a multitasking, multiuser, multiprocessor architecture, are discussed. The performance of such systems is critically dependent on the backplane chosen and a properly designed backplane can very considerably simplify the designer's task. It is shown that the IEEE P896 (Futurebus) standard takes into consideration many of the problems likely to be encountered in a high-performance system and can offer economic solutions to most of them.
