RECOGNITION OF ARABIC HANDPRINTED MATHEMATICAL FORMULAS

摘要：
This paper proposes a technique for the recognition of handprinted and/or printed Arabic mathematical formulae. The technique can be divided into five major components: (1) acquisition; (2) decomposing of formulae into component characters using separate algorithms; (3) segmentation of words into characters; (4) recognition; and (5) formulae parsing using a mathematical grammar. The processing speed is close to two characters per second with a 87% recognition rate. All algorithms described in this paper were written in Pascal and run on an IBM PC/AT.
