Current discussions on the goals of further education in psychoanalysis and the appropriate frequency and duration of psychoanalytic treatment are influenced by professional politics and material interests. However, these discussions should also be oriented to changing perceptions of the professional competence of the psychoanalyst. The author's personal review shows how these perceptions change in a very short period of time. The most important reference point for a change in psychoanalytic methods is clinical experience with patients.
