摘要：
At the onset of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic, investigators at the University of California, San Francisco, realized the need for a resource of AIDS-related specimens, such as body fluids and tissue, which would be used in studies of this devastating disease. We established a small specimen bank that has grown from 25 specimens in 1983 to more than 34,000 in 1990. To date the bank has sent out more than 50,000 samples worldwide. This article discusses the history of the bank and describes its procedures.
