REPRODUCTION AND FECUNDITY OF THE WHITE SEA COPEPOD CALANUS-GLACIALIS IN AGUARIAL CONDITIONS

Egg production of the arctic copepod Calanus glacialis was studied in June-July, 1987 in Kandalaksha Bay of the White Sea. Single females were kept in glass containers in the sea at the depth 1.5 - 2 m. They were fed with diatom Phaeodactylum tricomutum culture in concentration 500 cells/ml. Clutch size varied from 1 to 67 eggs/fem, in average 25.8 +/- 1.6 eggs/fem. Spawning intervals ranged from 1 to 4 days, mean 1.64 +/- 0.1 d. Daily egg production rate varied from 5.0 to 33.4 eggs/fem.d. It was 13.2 +/- 2.7 eggs/fem.d in average for all females, corresponding to 2.2% body C(org) per day. The highest number of eggs spawned by a single female was 719 corresponding to 128% body C(org). The comparison of the obtained results with previously published data shows the great variability in productivity of C. glacialis females in different areas and years.
