摘要：

The present article analyses the representation of the Brazilian space in the literature of the First Republic (1889-1930). It focuses on books published between 1896 and 1925 and it attempts to understand the way the Brazilian regions were, cognitive and symbolically, appropriated. The essay advocates that regional literary production had a high sense of space, thematized according to complex meanings that demonstrate its plastic, subjective and dynamic character.
