After expressing agreement with various items in the paper by Stevens, this commentary makes a number of additional points. With the advent of the European Economic Commission and Mercosul (Brazil, Paraguay, Urugay, and Argentina), physicians are being produced for at least a continent; their experience should be studied. even if doctors from abroad are poorly educated, they have something to teach in their new setting and should not be constrained only to learn. Human relations and respect for the patient are central to medicine, and to medical education, regardless of time or place.
