AIDS-related grief among gay men has specific and unique characteristics that differentiate it from other types of loss. In order to understand the phenomenon and address adequately the needs of grieving gay men, clinicians need to take into account the following components of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS)-related grief: 1) the adverse effects of multiple, cumulative loss; 2) the unique characteristics of gay male subculture and the relevance of ''gay grief''; 3) the shortcomings of popular grief models; and 4) the importance of finding meaning in ongoing adversity.
