DEVELOPMENT OF TWIN-ROLL STRIP CASTER FOR SHEET STEELS

POSCO and RIST of Korea, together with Davy in the UK, are collaborating in the development of strip casting by the twin roll process. A pilot plant for producing 350 mm wide thin strip in 1 t coils has been constructed and commissioned at the Pohang Works of POSCO. Pilot plant parameters determined by physical and mathematical modelling are described, plant startup and general operation practices are reviewed, and early results from a programme of product quality evaluation of as cast and cold rolled materials are introduced, in terms of surface and internal qualities.
