CALCULUS OF VARIATIONS VIA THE GRIFFITHS FORMALISM

For general variational problems with one independent variable, we discuss Griffiths' construction of the Euler-Lagrange system on an affine sub-bundle of T* M where M is the phase space of the variational problem. We show that, subject to some regularity assumptions, the Griffiths criterion gives necessary and sufficient conditions for the associated functional to be stationary.
