TIME-FREE TRANSFERS BETWEEN LIBRATION-POINT ORBITS IN THE ELLIPTIC RESTRICTED PROBLEM

This work is part of a larger research effort directed toward the formulation of a strategy to design optimal time-free impulsive transfers between three-dimensional libration-point orbits in the vicinity of the interior L1 libration point of the Sun-Earth/Moon barycenter system. Inferior transfers that move a spacecraft from a large halo orbit to a smaller halo orbit are considered here. Primer vector theory is applied to non-optimal impulsive trajectories in the elliptic restricted three-body problem in order to establish whether the implementation of a coast in the initial orbit, a coast in the final orbit, or dual coasts accomplishes a reduction in fuel expenditure. The addition of interior impulses is also considered. Results indicate that a substantial savings in fuel can be achieved by the allowance for coastal periods on the specified libration-point orbits. The resulting time-free inferior transfers are compared to time-free superior transfers between halo orbits of equal z-amplitude separation.
