The article seeks to analyse Gilda de Melo e Souza's PhD about fashion in the XIX century, creating parallels with the political situation at the time, feminism and her own carrier as a professor and as the first woman to be Department of Philosophy Chair, at FFLCH-USP. It's also analyzed the distinction between these three dualities of opposites: custom x fashion; poor x rich; woman x man in her research, how a woman got into social life in the XIX century through fashion and how Gilda herself go into the intellectual life.
