摘要
Neo-Confucianism has applied the theory of " Inward Transcendence" to summarize the understanding of transcendence in Chinese traditional culture, since the starting point for Chinese culture' s pursuit of transcendence is nature, the cosmos and human mystical experience, which in the end pertain to the human mind. The motivation in traditional Chinese culture to pursue transcendence has not 'been strong, which results in a paradoxical understanding that " no transcendence is transcendence". The Neo-Confucians have misunderstood Christianity as stopping at " outward transcendence, " but in Christianity the reestablishment of the broken relationship between God and human beings, and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit within humans, are key to turning "outward transcendence,, into "inward transcendence". It is true that Christian doctrine holds that human beings in their "corrupted" state cannot transcend by themselves wholly through morality or reason. Such understanding has been strongly refuted by Neo-Confucians who think Christianity has played down humanity to such an extent that human beings have lost their hope and basis for transcendence. However, it is the recognition of the corruption of human nature in Christianity that provides new pivotal, points for people to accept Truth, and new possibilities for practising "dialogical transcendence".
