OUT OF THE IVORY TOWER - PREPARING RESEARCHERS FOR TOMORROWS WORLD

The paper discusses the need for researchers in the computing discipline to be capable of communicating with developers of their research. The relevant aspects of the 1993 UK White Paper, 'Realising our Potential', are considered, together with the recent Postgraduate Training guidelines, produced by the Economic and Social Research Council, These guidelines for a change in research training, which are driven by the need for better communication and development of research, have been examined at Southampton Institute, and the manner in which they are being addressed and implemented is discussed in detail.
