INVESTIGATION OF MICROMAGNETIC EDGE STRUCTURES OF DOUBLE-LAYER PERMALLOY-FILMS

Laminated, exchange-insulated Permalloy layers have been proposed to reduce magnetization noise in recording heads because in these systems closure domains are replaced by a narrow edge structure, the edge-curling wall. The reaction and switching of this edge pattern in an external field was studied both theoretically and experimentally with a high resolution Kerr-microscope. We observed transitions within the edge-curling wall and interactions of these transitions with ordinary 180°-walls. In addition, we investigated the magnetization distribution in narrow double-layer strips, where the edge-curling wall becomes unstable with decreasing strip width and is replaced by other domain patterns. © 1990.
