A 10-year-old Quarter Horse was presented for an acute abdominal crisis after eating persimmons on two occasions. Her temperature was 38.9-degrees-C, her pulse was 60 beats/minute, and respiration was 40 breaths/minute. Although it was recommended that she be brought to the hospital for observation, the mare's owners refused. A nasogastric tube was placed, but the horse died. Persimmons contain tannins which can be potentially toxic in large amounts. Tannins have the ability to form bonds with soluble proteins which accounts for their adverse effects in animals, including impaction colic in horses.
