STORAGE MANAGEMENT IN GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION-SYSTEMS

Geographic information systems (GIS) require storage of multi-media data such as images, maps, graphical objects and texts. The need to store different media data in the same database requires a redesign of the storage management system of the traditional database management systems. In this paper, we study the multimedia storage requirements of GIS and propose a storage manager suitable for GIS applications. The storage manager is designed to provide efficient support for the storage, retrieval and modification of spatial, large and complex objects efficiently. Its major features include new space allocation strategies for large objects, superclass-subclass relationship support, index extensibility, and buffer management for indexes.
