Multiple mechanisms may be involved in the pathogenesis of hypertension, and most patients with hypertension have other alterable coronary risk factors. With current knowledge of the impact of various nondrug and drug therapies on these mechanisms and risk factors, it is possible to prescribe an effective regimen that meets the specific needs of each patient. This individualized approach offers the potential for more successful therapy in terms of controlling blood pressure and reducing the risk of premature cardiovascular disease.
