The article is devoted to the specifics of professional development in contemporary sociocultural conditions. The results of the empirical research of contemporary professional development are given. We used the following methods to collect the data: career anchors test by E. Schein; F. Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI); Values Survey Module, G. Hofstede (VSM). Sample: 194 employees, aged from 25 to 29 years. We made the type of professional development a dependent variable. The following characteristics were considered as predictors: adoption/avoidance of uncertainty; short-term/longterm orientation; traditional/secular rational values; importance of self-expression; distance in relation to the authorities (trust/distrust to authority); individualism/collectivism; autonomy; propensity to entrepreneurship and innovative activities; professional mobility / professional stability. The results of the statistical analysis make it possible to state that there are two types of professional development. Also significant differences between two types of professional development exist in parameters: Trust/Distrust of authority, Entrepreneurship, Integration of life styles, Stability of work and residence, Service, Professional Competence, traditional / secular rational values, Past-Negative, Future depending on the type of professional development. The authors describe the content characteristics of each type of professional development. The traditional variant of professional development presupposes career advancement, orientation to stability in the organization and the level of wages, the value of past achievements, and adherence to social norms. Professional development as an implementation of the life and self-development is focused on standards of quality of life, job satisfaction and subjective well-being and involves professional mobility, orientation to the future and commitment to one's own life path.
