The rupture of the distal biceps tendon

The distal tendon of the biceps is of vital importance for pronation as well as supination of the forearm. A rupture leads to a significant loss of strength for the flection of the elbow as well as the supination of the forearm. Because unsatisfying results accompany the conservative method of treatment, acute rupture of the distal biceps tendon is an indication for surgery when high functional demands are required. Particularly excellent clinical results can be attained by the anatomic reinsertion of the tendon on the tuberositas radii. The risks and complications of the hitherto existing operation methods are considerably reduced with the newer anchoring methods. Apart from the demonstration of the etiology as well as the clinical portrait and the corresponding clinical diagnostics of the distal biceps tendon rupture, the different methods of operation are briefly explained. Furthermore, the difficulty of partial ruptures as well as older ruptures and incorrect healing as well as reconstruction possibilities are also presented.
