HYPERTHYROIDISM IN CATS (REPRINTED)

Hyperthyroidism is a disease caused by high levels of thyroid hormone produced by tumors in one dr both of the lobes of the thyroid gland. The increased metabolic rate causes weight loss, gastrointestinal disturbances, behavioral changes, and serious cardiac and renal compromise. Because most hyperthyroid cats are geriatric, the additional stress on older organs is often life-threatening. Long-term therapy is determined on an individual case basis. Many animals respond well to therapy; careful monitoring of the cat's condition through periodic examinations and laboratory work is essential for successful control of the disease.
