Widespread underground construction activity that has taken place over the past century in Italy has provided Italian constructors with a wealth of experience and has enabled them to successfully overcome the variable and difficult geological conditions that characterize Italy's subsurface. This tunnelling activity has resulted in a number of interesting tunnel works, some of the most recent of which are described in this article.
