CHEMICAL COMPOSITION AND ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY AGAINST CANDIDA ALBICANS OF ESSENTIAL OIL FROM LEAVES OF CINNAMOMUM PORRECTUM

Essential oil was distilled from the leaves of Thep-ta-ro, Cinnamomum porrectum (Roxb.) Kosterm., yielded 1.1% of fresh weight. Analysis of essential oil by GC/MS showed that the main component (99.8%) is either iso-safrole or safrole. Further analysis of the oil using proton NMR spectroscopy revealed that the main peak is safrole. The oil was shown to be active against Candida albicans with an MIC 0.063% by volume. Thus, C. porrectum essential oil provided a potential for treatment of candida infections.
