WHEN A VERB IS ANTONYM OF ITSELF: COGNITION AND LEXICAL STRUCTURE OF ' TO RAISE'

This paper analyzes the semantic structure of "levantar", one of the Portuguese verbs of vertical movement. We shall demonstrate some differences between the prototypical structures of " levantar" and its synonym "erguer" and also the implications that these differences generate in the metaphorical meanings of the verbs. It shows the advantages of a cognitive approach to lexical analysis and finally, based on the theoretical methodology and analysis presented, it advances a descriptive schema for a lexical entry of the Portuguese verb " levantar".
