Off visions of rural depopulation in Franco's Spain

dAgricultural modernisation and territorial and social unbalances have been commonly seen as a consequence of the agrarian policy of Francisco Franco's political regime. This association of agriculture and economic development, which was the dominant ideology in agrarian thinking during the Franco regime, clearly influenced the academic studies on the modernization of Spanish agriculture that were made after the end of the Franco regime as well. This contribution analyses an alternative view that was also present during the Franco regime - one based on the social and demographic problems linked to the changes that were taking place in Spanish agriculture.
