The CO2-reduced use of hydrogen in the energy supply may find a speeded dissemination in future, if it is first burnt together with natural gas in existing plants. Besides the already practised use in stream generators and gas turbines today, a limited utilization in conventional diesel-gas engines is possible, which nowadays shows the highest effective efficiencies of electricity generation in decentralized power stations. The hydrogen use on a technical scale was tested on an exhaust gas turbo-charged four-stroke diesel engine. Thereby increasing effective efficiencies at simultaneously reduced emissions of CO2, NO(x), CO and C(m)H(n) were ascertained by exploiting the poor operational options of hydrogen in the pilot injection process with a rising H-2-content in the natural gas.
