BLOOD RESPONSE TO PLASTICIZED POLY(VINYL CHLORIDE)

Flexible poly(vinyl chloride), PVC, plasticised with di(2-ethyl hexyl)phthalate (DEHP) remains one of the most widely used biomaterials. Interest in the migratory properties of DEHP makes it appropriate to consider PVC plasticised with low migratory plasticisers. While emphasis has been placed on plasticiser extraction, little has been reported on the blood compatibility of such systems. In-vitro and ex-vivo blood compatibility has been examined to compare PVC tubings plasticised with DEHP, trioctyl trimellitate or polymeric adipate. The investigation indicates that plasticisers other than DEHP merit further consideration, but that the continued use of DEHP is acceptable.
