Unity and Diversity of Sport Science in Germany

In the 1970s when the DVS (Deutsche Vereinigung fur Sportwissenschaft/German Association of Sport Science) was founded sport science in Germany was believed to be one - its unity and identity being created by the ethos of scientists who wanted to contribute to the development of a culture, the culture of sport. Sport science, thus, was focused on and unified by the pedagogical dream of a better sport; teaching sport science in German universities was, mainly, educating PE teachers. Meanwhile, sport science started more and more to split up into the diverse disciplines and has found entrance to many different fields of research and studying. Is there any need for coherence, and what can be done for maintaining an identity of sport science ?
