Developments in the medical treatment of glaucoma reported between October 1990 and September 1991 are reviewed here. Topics discussed include the efficacy of treatment to lower intraocular pressure in protecting glaucomatous eyes against progression of visual field defects; the adverse effects of beta-blocker therapy; the efficacy of topically active carbonic anhydrase inhibitors; and the intraocular pressure-lowering effects of synthetic and naturally occurring prostaglandins. The ocular use of apraclonidine, bunazosin, ketanserin, and other drugs is also discussed.
