Cognitive-behavioral treatment in a child with Tourette Syndrome

Tics are a common disorder in childhood. The treatment often resort to pharmacology therapy, although habit reversal treatment is the psychological treatment of choice for chronic motor tic disorder, there are hardly any single case studies that demonstrate the effectiveness of psychological intervention in children with tics. This study aimed to study the application of psychological treatment in a case an 8-year old child with Tourette syndrome, corroborating the effectiveness of habit reversal treatment for children with tics. The treatment consisted of habit reversal treatment during nine sessions, including psycho-education, treatment and monitoring application components. The results showed that the child reduced and completely removes chronic motor tic disorder after nine weeks of treatment, highlighting the effectiveness of the psychological treatment for tics without medication.
