In this study we analyze German economic unification and compare the West German economic miracle of the 19509 with the conditions in Eastern Germany. Evaluating the chances of an economic miracle it seems that the prospects are modest since there is a considerable risk that an East German economic miracle would reduce West German economic growth and thereby weaken the all-German economy. A comparison of Germany in 1949/50 and 1989/90 shows significant divergences. East German restructuring offers limited lessons for Eastern European countries, but the few clearcut conclusions are quite important for the systemic transformation for which a growth-oriented long run strategy promises most success.1
