Acute Management of Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease

Given the aging of the population, chronic kidney disease (CKD) is increasing in prevalence owing to the rise in incidence of hypertension and diabetes mellitus. CKD is a progressive disease, and early detection and comprehensive management are key to preventing further complications. This is especially important in the inpatient setting, where management of fluid and electrolyte abnormalities, anemia, and mineral metabolism imbalances is essential to optimizing therapy. Pharmacists should be conversant with therapy goals for and management of hospitalized patients with CKD, the framework for classification, and the management and treatment of abnormal parameters associated with CKD. The knowledgeable pharmacist can have an impact on the management of this disease state.
