PRINCIPALS PERCEPTIONS OF THE NEED FOR COUNSELORS IN INTERMEDIATE SCHOOLS

For over 40 years recommendations regarding the need for counselling in intermediate schools have been remarkably consistent: there was a need for more comprehensive guidance and counselling services and for specialist, trained staff to implement such services. In this telephone survey 74 intermediate school principals were interviewed to update information about current guidance provisions and the need for additional services in their schools. Although the range of services currently provided was quite extensive, most principals reported a need for specialist counsellors.
