Experimental data and hydrocode calculations for hypervelocity impacts of stainless steel into aluminium in the 2-8 km/s range

Experimental hypervelocity impact data have been obtained for stainless steel, 304-L, projectiles impacting large, 6061-T6 aluminium alloy blocks. Simulations using existing hydrocodes are generally seen to compare reasonably well with these data. However, small differences are observed at higher velocities. The sensitivity of final crater geometries to variations in parameters controlling the strain hardening and thermal softening contributions in the Steinberg-Cochran-Guinan strength model is investigated. Correct determination of the onset of melt and thermal softening in calculations, is considered significant in accounting for the differences which exist between code and experimental results.
