An ultimate personal communications system provides users with ability to communicate any time, any where and in any form regardless of media. Microcellular technology will play a great role as an access system in personal communications. This paper first addresses the basic idea of cell structure and the role of microcell systems for personal communications. It then presents leading-edge microcell technology developed so far with particular reference to PHS (Personal Handy Phone Systems) and ifs evolution to enhanced wireless multimedia services. Finally, proposed is an advanced concept and microcell technology based on CDMA for FPLMTS.
