LABOR MIGRANTS: INTERGENERATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS IN RURAL MIGRANTS' FAMILIES IN BURYATIA

The article considers the issue of impact of rural-to-urban migration of women on intergenerational relationships in rural families in post-Soviet Buryatia. The main attention of the researchers is focused on transnational migration of women to Russia however rural-to-urban migration of women also remains one of the main factors for family transformations in rural area of the country. The literature on the theme of women migration impact on the family is reviewed. Theory of intergenerational transfers is applied. There are two main forms of transfers: material (monetary, gifts, unpaid domestic labor) and non-material (emotional support). The older generation provides care for the children that were stayed behind by women migrated to the city. The wireless telephony widely distributed on the territory of the Republic of Buryatia became an important resource for intergenerational solidarity and support on a distance. Material transfers flows from the older generation to a younger one. Intergenerational support becomes especially important in the context of agrarian sector crises and deficit of institutionalized social support.
