CLINICAL-EXPERIENCE WITH CEFUROXIME AXETIL FOR THE TREATMENT OF RTI IN THE ELDERLY PATIENTS

Cefuroxime axetil, an ester of cefuroxime, is the first oral cephalosporin with a broad spectrum and a good stability towards beta-lactamases. Compared to aminopenicillines, first generation cephalosporines and erythromycine, this molecule is highly active against the most frequent germs in lower respiratory tract infections - infected chronic bronchitis and pneumonia - among the elderly, as well as having a good stability to beta-lactamases, particularly those produced by Haemophilus influenzae and Branhamella catarrhalis. The anti-bacteria spectrum, the pharmacocinetics among the elderly, the good tolerance and clinical efficacy make cefuroxime axetil an interesting antibiotic in the treatment of lower respiratory tract infections among the elderly patients with no severe immunodepression.
