Teaching the management of information systems & technology (IST) has become especially significant, at a time when the effective management of IST has become a critical factor in many organisations. But teaching IST management is also a challenge, in determining what to teach, and how. Given the integrating nature of the manager's role, managers and users of IST need to understand and deal with the subject of IST as an integrated whole, if their management is to be effective. Based on a survey of syllabii, texts, and users, a unifying model is presented that aims to address this challenge and this need. The model implies requisite definitions for the discipline of IST, and its management, which are developed as a foundation. A taxonomy is also developed.
