High melting point, low atomic number and resistance to thermal fatigue and erosion are the desirable attributes of materials for fusion containment vessels, limiters and other components. However, such materials are subjected to hydrogen ion bombardment from a circulating plasma. This interaction results in the formation and adsorption of various molecular complexes on material surfaces. Their release as an impurity can poison the plasma and lower its temperature, as well as cause surface damage. We have undertaken the characterization of some such surfaces.
