In this paper the performance of three shell elements: four-node element, nine-node element and 16-node element, has been examined. The central point is the accuracy of estimating normal stresses under different boundary conditions and the capability of describing transverse shear stresses. Also discussed is whether the accuracy of stresses can be improved by using the least squares method. Finally, the time expenses of applying the three elements are compared.
