VIBRATIONS OF CARBON-SUPPORTED ULTRAFINE IRON-OXIDE PARTICLES

Carbon-supported 5 nm iron oxide particles have been studied by use of Mossbauer Spectroscopy. It is found that the spectral area decreases rapidly with increasing temperature and the temperature dependence of its logarithm is linear above 5 K. This indicates that particle vibrations give an important contribution to the mean square amplitude of the atoms. After wetting the sample with water the logarithm of the area still varies linearly with temperature, but the slope is reduced considerably. This indicates that the formation of ice around the particles reduces the particle vibrations.
