The purpose of this paper intends to investigate the relationship among essay, culture and modernity in Latin America in order to outline its modern filiation in the subcontinent. The exposition is composed by two parts: the first one sketches the main contributing factors that accompanied the beginnings and the acclimatation of the essay in the historical ground and the cultural landscape of our nations, paying attention to the links among the historical situations and the expressive possibilities of the essay. The second part explores the relationships among modernity, literacy, culture and critical thought in Latin America.
