URBAN-GROWTH AND LAND-USE CONFLICTS - THE CASE OF NEW BOMBAY

The purpose of this study is to capture the complexities of the actual process of land-use change on the rural-urban fringe of a metropolitan city in India. The study highlights the social and economic costs of large-scale land acquisition by the state, indicating that the land-use transition does not occur smoothly and in fact can be a conflict-ridden process. While public intervention in the land market can help control speculative land prices, the existing methods of land acquisition and land development by the government have built-in inequities. -from Author
