Variability in growth-rate of massive Porites in the coral reefs of Mayotte island

摘要：
A sclerochronological study of the growth variability of massive Porites of solida-lobata-lutea group in the reef-lagoonal complex of Mayotte is presented. Mean annual growth rate of sampled Porites varies between 10.5 and 17.4 mm.a(-1), with an average of 12.9 +/- 2.4 mm.a(-1). An increase of the growth rate in direction of an inshore-off-shore gradient with a decrease on the outer slope is observed. This increase of growth rate is related to high water transparency, law particulate matter content, high concentration of plankton, a higher wave action and in consequence limited to terrigenous inputs.
