This paper describes the theoretical basis for a design methology which allows very wide dynamic range switched-current processing. We identify the fundamental relationships which govern speed, dynamic range, and power consumption and present a design mechanism for trading off between these three quantities. The methology is then applied to the problem of obtaining very wide dynamic range and a new circuit is shown which achieves this in very small silicon area. The aim of the paper is to present the reader with some analysis methods and design issues which may help in bringing good performance out of switched-current cells; and in some cases higher performance than is possible in equivalent switched capacitor circuits.
