PERFORMANCE OF ROHU, LABEO-ROHITA (HAM), IN SOME PERENNIAL AND SEASONAL RESERVOIRS OF SRI-LANKA - AN EVALUATION

Rohu (Labeo rohita) has been stocked intensively in a few perennial reservoirs in Sri Lanka as well as in polyculture systems in seasonal reservoirs. In this paper performance of Rohu in three perennial reservoirs and in fifteen seasonal reservoirs is evaluated. Recovery rates observed for Rohu in 3 perennial reservoirs, Kandalama, Udawalawe and Giritale were 29.49%, 12.52% and 20.83%, respectively. Percent contribution of Rohu to the total catch in these reservoirs was 43.87%, 6.59% and 13.02%, respectively. Weight of fish obtained per every 100 fingerlings of Rohu stocked was 36.86 kg, 15.65 kg and 26.00 kg, while the financial rate of return for Rohu fingerlings stocked was 777.36%, 272.6% and 519.0%, for Kandalama, Udawalawe and Giritale reservoirs, respectively. In the 15 seasonal reservoirs mean values of recovery rate, percent contribution to the total catch, weight of fish obtained per 100 Rohu fingerlings stocked and financial rate of return for Rohu fingerlings stocked were 48.18%, 22.67%, 31.16 kg and 641.9%, respectively. Stocking of perennial reservoirs with Rohu fingerlings is recommended during periods in which fish fingerlings are not required for seasonal reservoir stocking.
